The Explore
So after some nice trains it was back to business as usual and a decent explore of this engineering site.

Spiral staircase was certainly a highlight and climbing about on the roof cranes was good fun :)

The History
The Butterley Company was an English manufacturing firm founded as Benjamin Outram and Company in 1790. Portions of it existed until 2009.

Notable patents were taken out by the company's manager, Sir John Alleyne. In December 1859 Alleyne patented a method of producing a load-bearing iron beam known as the Butterley Bulb, used in many early iron steam ships including HMS Warrior In 1861 Alleyne patented a method that allowed hot ingots to be moved around a roller after they had passed by just one person. During the production of steel sections the bar has to be repeatedly put through rollers. Allowing this to happen using just one person was a substantial increase in productivity. By 1863 the company was rolling the largest masses of iron of any foundry in the country. Among its most famous buildings are the Barlow train shed at St. Pancras in London which included 240-foot spans.

Glad to see other people doing it. The offices are full of ancient paperwork, in a way I'm glad they're sealed as it keeps the yobs out!

Yeah only this one area was open sadly, seems to be quite recent metal sheeting over all the windows and doors of the admin type building..

Thats a shame, sadly only one area open and via a rather obvious way so I imagine if any security or owners etc would have strolled onto the site they would have spotted the opening pretty quickly :(

The offices were for the foundry before the main works closed. What few staff were left ran the business from there and sub contracted out the work.
The workshop was a machine shop, full of turning, milling machines etc. You can only imagine the size of the jobs that were produced given the overhead cranes.

Hey nice report and photos, I was there the other day, I've got it nearly every building on the site, the only one I couldn't was the small building to right of the main gate, there's abit of awkward climbing to do, but the medical centre is worth a look but the big office block promanex is abit boring, there's a massive loft though that's alright I suppose, loads of racking with old stuff on and loads of dead butterfly's...
