Hey all:
Its been ages since an explore and report, seem to be so busy these days.. Managed to get a day in just before new year
Target Details:
Swanwick Junction railway station is a heritage railway station situated on the former Ambergate to Pye Bridge Line which closed in 1968, but has been partially reopened by the Midland Railway - Butterley. Despite the station's name it is some distance from Swanwick.
Previously, there was originally no station here (during BR/LMS days), only a junction with the Swanwick Colliery Branch Line. However, when the line was restored, Swanwick campus was the centre for the main activities of the Midland Railway - Butterley, and the station gives access to the attractions there. The station itself is within walking distance of Butterley railway station to the west.
The station has four platforms. Platform No. 1 is the southernmost and is a bay platform. Platform No. 2 is the main platform in use and is a side platform.
Mission Details:
I happened to stumble on this while taking my kid to a santa themed train ride, on the journey I could see a lot of abandoned trains, decided to check it out, and realised in doing so its a site thats been reported, and one I had probably seen a report from! So connecting this all up, decided we would get a visit in before the year was gone. The station itself is fairly iconic, and I realise that most of the site itself was built for an attraction rather than use but this place has some interesting stuff. I think you may be able to access some of it as part of the museum, but we got there nice and early to get the best bits. Fairly pleased with the vid for this one, although will be the last time with a manual giro (shakey cam). We tried both signal boxes, they were both locked sadly.
Documentation:
cheers for looking...
