Cadeby Tunnel - South Yorkshire. July 2020

The 163yard long Cadeby Tunnel was situated on the Conisbrough to Wrangbrook Jn also served Cadeby Main Colliery and Brodsworth Main Colliery, the line’s construction was heavily backed by the Denaby & Cadeby Colliery Company which had agreed to move at least 310,000 tons of coal over the line to Hull each year for 21 years in total! The tunnel at Cadeby was constructed in 1892 and is in close distance to the Conisbrough Tunnel which is still operational on the Sheffield - Doncaster line, Goods traffic started service on the line in September 1894 with passengers starting in December of the same year with stations at Pickburn & Brodsworth, Sprotborough, Denaby & Conisbrough although the line never saw great foot traffic so in 1903 the passenger services were withdrawn. Most of the line succumbed to closure in August 1967 although a short section was retained to serve Middleton Limestone Quarry until 1975 which then ceased bringing to end the Tunnel operational life. The section serving Cadeby & Denaby Main Collieries continued until March 1982 when the pits closed. The tunnels largely built from stone with small blue brick repair sections, several refuges are even positioned and the tunnel was single track.

The explore... we arrived at the end of Garden Lane having passed through Cadeby village the lane leads to a large construction yard however it’s also littered with fly tipping and dubious local youths one particularly guy looked very suspicious so we turned back at parked on the A630 just topside Conisbrough then walked back towards Cadeby Tunnel over the Conisbrough Viaduct, very easy to spot when you know where the tunnel is no effort to get in either other than making sure you don’t slip in the mud, nice steady explore despite its short length it lit up nicely...

Thanks for Looking.
