History

Caldwell House was supppsedly built around 1715 as a private residence and estate. In 1927 it changed use and became a hospital for mentally handicapped children. A serious fire broke out in 1995, leaving the house to deteriorate into the condition it now lingers in.

Report

This was a brief and spontaneous visit on a very snowy/wet day.
The building was very impressive upon approach via the extensive old driveway. Especially with the snow floating about it; very atmospheric!

The main house consists of three floors and a basement, and still boasts a beautiful castellated exterior, but completely lacks a roof. As a result, on wet and icy days like this, the stairs are death traps. This made exploring the upper and lower levels a no-go for today unfortunately.

The floors are missing or in various stages of collapse in parts.

The nearby laundry building seemed to be in much better condition externally, and its chimney, still intact, is an impressive sight.

Hard-pressed for time, and with weather conditions worsening, we decided to leave.

All in all, a great little explore, and still an impressive and slightly eerie place given the fact there’s not much left to it.

NOTE:
We entered using the main route: by car, through a gate from the main road, and driving right up to the house via the old driveway through the old estate lands.
Though, there is an inhabited modern house beside the entry gate on the main road, and a hot-tempered gate-troll of a woman living there (as we found out on our way out and she had just returned home from somewhere).
So unless you are lucky like us and manage to visit at a time when she is absent, I suggest parking your car in the nearby village of Lugton, or some other safe place, and make a short trek by foot through the old wooded estate lands to Caldwell House.

Or just walk across the golf course at the back of it ;)

Nice to see this place again. I really like your first pic, caught the snow falling in the air well.
