Cane Hill Medium Secure Unit was opened in 1987 and closed in 2008. It was a small 23-bed medium secure unit for those with severe mental health problems. It was also known as the SASS Unit, latterly known as Orchards medium secure forensic unit and Glencairn the forensic rehabilitation unit.

The building has three wings around a central administration and control room. One wing was for staff accommodation and offices, the other two wings were for patients in locked cells.

After entering the front doors you would have been here at the internal doors to the left, and the control room on the right. Access would have been controlled by this room.

After going through the doors there is the central communal area leading to the two secure wings, the craft room, medical room, kitchen, laundry and the time-out room.
