I had been wanting to see inside here for a while, especially as it’s where they Kray twins spent some time ... a bit of history.

The prison originated as a county gaol in 1808 and served as a Home Office archive during the First World War. After a time as a Naval Detention Centre during WW2, the prison reopened in 1946 as a local prison to serve the courts of Kent. In 2002 it became a category C training prison and in 2006 a foreign nationals prison.

In 2003 Canterbury Prison was highlighted by the Prison Reform Trust as being one of the most overcrowded prisons in the country, claiming that Canterbury was overpopulated 57%.
Two years later the Howard League for Penal Reform criticised the prison for its high rates of suicides amongst inmates.

In 2007 Canterbury Prison was converted to hold only foreign national prisoners in the UK. This was to allow a centralisation of specialised immigration and language services for foreign prisoners, as well as to allow dedicated immigration officials to work on the deportation of as many inmates as possible (on completion of their sentence).

In 2008 the Princess Royal visited Canterbury as part of celebrations marking the 200th anniversary of the prison.

On 10 January 2013, the Ministry of Justice announced that Canterbury was one of six prisons that would close. The prison formally closed on 31 March 2013 and was put up for sale in March 2014.

permission visit I assume as this is now owned and maintained by the University? Its nice in there, I've yet to see the underground tunnel running from here.
You also need to add a month and year to your report title.

Is it actually closed then?

Not any more, it is owned by Canterbury Christchurch University who held their summer ball there last year. I believe some of the place has already been put back into use with the rest awaiting planning consent.

A bit like that Mortuary then eh ? wonder what the NHS would think of you passing 'work' off as an explore

I am very reluctant to believe this has been explored properly as I work closely with the Uni and have visited the place after closure. Unless you have a three tier ladder to hand or a mate on security I doubt you will have got further than the outer wall.

This place is very secure and is run by the uni. So id be shocked to see it unsecure! A few prisons do offer tours etc, but having worked in many a HMP, leaving them unsecure whilst in this state I would say is a no no

Bit of a post resurrection. Visited this place on a permission just after it closed, totally forgot I had photos of the place.

Seen the tunnel running from the court to the prison and the courtroom itself. Not missing out much on the tunnel.

Hmm that's weird. I remember when you told me it was permission. You contacted the owner saying you were looking for filming locations. So they let you in. No point lying mate..

Thanks for clearing that up mate. I was already fairly sure this guys full of shit and it was confirmed by his other 'permission' visits he had tried to pass off as explores. A number of locals have been here with permission and also know the place well so its the wrong crowd to try and blag it to. Respect earned on this forum....NONE.
