Carbide

Au vieux campeur: about €12 a tub,and normal Paris shop opening hours, St Michel metro.

£2 a kilo from Germany, TF will no doubt tell us about it.

a) have you tried other ways than search on the net, like walking into your local (small or big) gardening-, paint-, caving- or chemist shops,
asking for that anti mole / root vole stuff ?
b) thought about shops in Belgium, Luxemburg or Netherlands ?
(I've seen videos about carbide shooting in Netherlands, Belgium would be close to Calais)
c) My last buy was last year in a small paint shop 2min from my home, where I found accidentially that he is selling it for anti root vole reasons.
I am not sure how much he has left in the moment, it was a few months ago.
I paid 2.50 euros a kilo, for that carbide made in China.
He said that he doesn't know whether he will buy another batch, because it sells so slow and he has to order 1000kg.
I would have to check.
Bigger problem would be, how to hand it over, but I would help, if possible
I can not really believe that this ebay seller shown above, can send it by post.
In a climbing / cave shop in my city, they sold it for 6 euros last year

LED is killing Carbide / Carbure

Honestly TF, you can't buy it in the shops over here, maybe two places in the whole country.

Well i just bought 3kg from Caving Supplies and it worked out to about £40 delivered. Cant complain too much at that!

The 3kg tub might be a bit much for most people but you can share quite easily.. I know when it gets left for long periods it tends to 'go off' a bit. The last lot i used under paris came from the labs of a derelict factory in 2009 so at least 6 years old. It still worked but didn't seem to last half the time brand new stuff does.

just been to the painters shop, two kegs full left, after that will be finish.
He won't order again, 1000kg is too much.
So maybe we can find a way

Anymore 'leads' about where to get carbide in the UK? I can get a kilo from caving supply shops for about £24, anywhere cheaper? Thought about buying it whilst on a kta trip, but can you bring a big tub of the stuff back on the Eurostar? What about getting it posted from abroad, possible?

Caving Supplies is £11.40 for 1KG or £30 for 3kg, not sure how much the postage is though. Can't find anything cheaper.

Wow, you guys pay crazy prices. France 1 - England 0

Sorry to bump an old thread. Anyone got any new leads on where's best to buy some carbide? or is it still caving supplies?

eBay is usually £20 a kilo delivered. Caving supplies looks your best bet in the UK.

Otherwise buy it in Paris. The shop "Au Vieux camper" is worth checking.

I specifically asked Eurostar about whether it was ok to bring carbide. They had to think about it, then said definitely not. However, I have taken it numerous times and not lost it once. 50% of the time they take a look at the lamp. I leave it empty, and open it up showing that it has no gas in it. That is fine. They are looking for gas cylinders (I lose those 75% of the time now) and flammable liquids.

Thanks for the information on the carbide and on the Eurostar. Do you happen to know what the ferry's stance is on taking it over?
