The hospital was founded in 1763 and was originally located in what is now Piccadilly Gardens. In May 1846, it was relocated to a new, 58 acre site in Cheadle, ten miles to the south. The patients were accommodated in temporary buildings until the main block was completed in 1850.

The new hospital was called Manchester Royal Hospital for the Insane. There was a wing for men and one for women. Each was divided into three sections according to the mental state of the patients, and each section had a separate garden. Recreation and entertainment, which later including cinema.

Parts of this site are still in use today as part of the Priory Group

Visited 14/07/17 at night. Tried to gain access from the Priory side without success. We went around to the business estate to try to find a way in but were again unsuccessful due to heavy camera coverage and security. Any tips on how to get in gratefully accepted.

This is one of the easiest places to get into so I don't think it really needs hints on how to do it.
