Question - Chester Tunnels

I remember when that collapse happened, the rumors about the tunnels seem to be on the south side of the street and way older than the victorian sewer under the road, they are probably just rumors though. I have always wondered why the south side of water gate is hollow though. there is remains of a roman sewer at the racecourse too.
