Clough Road Mills, Slaithwaite - December 2011

Visited with fishbrain

Fishbrain reminded me of this after he had a look to see if it was open a couple of months back. At the time, it wasn't. In the area to look at the situation with a couple of other places, we had a little look, and we were in luck. We never expected to find much in here, but in the end, it was okay... with the usual assortment of things too heavy to steal remaining. I always like the rich colours you get in mills, and this one was no different.

I haven't been able to find much on the history of the mill, but it was once a lot larger than it is to day. It's last occupiers were Schofield & Smith.

Schofield & Smith manufacture the finest English worsted cloth. The firm moved to Clough Road Mills in 1971. The company is thrived during the 70’s and the 80’s. Schofield & Smith had one hundred employees, with a production of 250,000 meters of fine worsteds a year. Most of the production was exported: in the Far East, Middle East or Europe.

The firm moved to Upper Mills, still in Slaithwaite, in 2008.

There have been plans to develop the remainder of the site into apartments, and to be honest, there are loads of excellent examples of mill conversions all over the Kirklees district – so I am not opposed to this.
