This was a rather impromptu explore. We were meant to be working in Caerphilly, however the work van had broken down on the way so we were stuck there wondering what to do. We were very close to spending a few hours in McDonald's when I remembered Cwm Coke was just down the road, so we set off to kill some time exploring. We arrived at the site and then realised my colleague was just wearing flip flops and had left his boots in the work van (So not pro) but luckily there were some spare holey trainers in the car which came to the rescue! a torch would have come in Useful too.. but sadly that too was in the van..

After creeping around in the bushes for a bit checking for Secca we were in, It was super exciting getting into this one after two failed attempts, the second of which resulting in an hour long game of cat and mouse around Beddau with Seffy, WhoDaresWins and some angry old men and a dog in a van!

Anyway we got in and it's a cracking site! Reports can't do it justice. We managed to do do the turbine hall and a few other bits and bobs before getting a call to say the van was back on the road. The conveyors will have to wait till next time.

History:

This site has been done a lot over the years and I'm sure many of you know it off the top of your heads. I'm going to steal mine for Lolly92's report:
Cwm Coke opened in 1958 as a site for processing the hundreds of thousand of tons of high quality, low sulphur coal per year which came from Cwm Colliery and turned into high-grade coke suitable for foundry use. By the 70's, Cwm coke was the workplace to some 1,500 men and produced on average 515,000 tons of coke per year.
The National Coal Board closed the colliery in 1986. For 16 years Cwm Coke continued to produce the low sulphur coke that the foundries of Port Talbot required, before finally closing in 2002.

Pictures! I really like the juxtaposition of the green summer vegetation and industrial decay! I hope you like what you see:

Cheers mate! It's a fantastic explore, well worth the trip although the secca are quite thorough! I shot all the photos with my Canon 700D, 40mm prime and Samyang 14mm prime! as I say the awesome light does make a nice change from the usual grey Welsh skys!

Number six stands out for me. It has a Chernobyl sort of feel to it. Don't get me wrong, lots of the other photos are awesome too though.
