Having read the rumours about plans of re-developing the Cwn Coke Works, I headed up to Beddau as I really wanted to see them before they vanished. I am happy to say that at the moment there are no signs (as far as I could tell) that they are being demolished.

Access to the site was relatively straightforward and only required a little bit of patience mainly because the ground was soaking wet. Once inside the only things I had to content with was dense undergrowth, nettles and brambles - nothing unexpected - and because of recent rain a lot of mud and slippery surfaces. For the four to five hours I was wandering around the site I did not encounter any security nor anybody else for that matter, although I occasionally thought that I heard voices and dog barking. However, I am not sure whether they came from within or from outside the fence or whether my imagination was playing tricks since the site is full of creaking, rattling and banging noises.

My plan was to start at the top of the Coking Ovens and work my way down and then to explore the outlying buildings. It took me a while to find a way up mainly due to the dense foliage and the large amount of surface water (which I assume is not normally a problem) but I was definitely happy that I was wearing my hiking boots. Once I found the door and the stairway it was all plain-sailing although I was definitely careful where I was putting my feet.

I had an amazing time there and assuming the Coke Works are still standing in a few months time I might well head back.

Love the photos, you had great light. I can remember driving near this place at night about 35 years ago.
Amazing site, never seen anything like it before, thought it was all on fire!

Cracking report. First time I went there was a dog running round then the cops came. I doubt that happens now.

Nice one, glad you got on alright and you came away with some good pictures there.

NB - I believe it is Cwm, not Cwn Coke Works ;)

Lovely shots, particularly like the one of the conveyor belt tower. Glad you got in okay and please to be of assistance. Will probably head back there myself some point next year.

The "Security" guard as he calls himself actually lives in the street leading up to the place.
He has keys to the gates and goes in from time to time with his dog/dogs if he hears, see's or gets told about anyone being there.
Hes caught me a few times in the past but just asks you to follow him as he escorts you off the premises, or if you catch him on a good day hell give you a mini tour :)

It is always amazing to think that these units around the country supplied through plentiful supplies of coal, coal gas, tar, coke and numerous other commodities.
Then along comes natural gas discovery’s and to a certain extent these places where rendered obsolete. Still supplying coke etc, but the coal gas no-longer a household commodity. it was pretty amazing to see these pictures since I only saw gasometers sticking up As the end product feeding homes.
Great pictures of a by-gone age I’m sure there are people around who could explain the usage of all that equipment. Good job.
