CYM Coke Works
Iv'e been a bit lax on the exploring front of late so when a suggestion of Welsh derps came up i deceided to dust off the Nikon.
Was totaly unprepared for this going in my shorts and trainers and without gloves and an early start didnt make me a happy bunny.
Visited with Spanners and Rustproofhawk.
Didn't see any men with dogs, the pallisade looked prety new ?

Cym Coke works was part of the NCB's coal products division but in the mid 70's it was transfered to a new company...."National Smokless Fuels ltd".It produced Foundary coke.
Three varieties of coal were blended ,including that from the adjacent Cym Colliery, which was washed at Cym washery

The Blending plant had a capacity of 4,500 tons in 4 bunkers and the service bunker had a capacity of 3000 tons

After blending the coal went into the ovens . Coking time was 26hrs producing coke with a moisture content of 6-8%.Output was 1530 tons/day

The coke was then passed through 2x 160 ton per hr hammer mills, then passed to 5x50 ton bunkers for loading.

By product from coking was gas.The capacity of the by products plant was 700000 cubic feet a day of gas.
Foull gas from the top of the ovens was drawn off by primary condensors and exhausters,2 xturbine driven exhausters were used taking steam at 120psi and 600 degf, exhausting at 23psi.The gas was passed to detarers where the tar was removed by electrostatic methods. This tar was snet to Caerphilly Tar distilation plant for processing into pitch

The gas then went to the salt house where ammonium sulphate was produced. The gas then passed to benzole scrubbers and then off to the fan house, some of the remaining foul gas was flared off.

The boilers operated at 810 degf and a pressure of 428psi,2 GEC double passout turbo generators took steam at 400psi 800 degf....the first passout was 130psi and trhe 2nd 25 psi.The system generated 11KV ,the power went to the mine at 3.3KV to the coke works and the SWEB grid,a 3.3KV substatuion was located at the de-tarers which also supplied the hammer mills and compressors.

Unfortunatly we didnt get to see a fair bit of the site, the famous Welsh weather appeared and we made a hasty retreat to the car passing nutters riding scramblers up the slagheaps. :)
Thanks for looking
