History
De Montfort University is named after Simon de Montfort, a 13th century Earl of Leicester credited with establishing the first parliament in 1265.
The De Montfort University Bedford was the sister university to De Montfort University Leicester, and together they made up one of the largest universities in the UK. Over 3,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students studied at Bedford, along with another 20,000 or so at the Leicester centre.
In 2006 there was an educational merger with Luton University (breaking links with De Montfort Leicester) and its name was changed to The University of Bedfordshire. With new facilities built at the Polhill campus (the university's other much larger site in Bedford), the Landsdowne campus was closed in 2007.
Today
The Landsdowne Road side of the campus consists of sizeable early 19th century housing (used for student accomodation and administration), have recently been converted back into residential use. The purpose built university buildings (built in the 60's) have suffered a few losses; the dining room and library making way to redevelop the housing behind. The Bowen West Theatre is also still with us, but did not pay it a re-visit this time around.
