History:
The Ditchingham maltings is situated in the picturesque valley of the river Waveney on the Norfolk Suffolk border. The site itself is split by the river and is located next to an ancient Roman ford.
Crisp Malting Group Ltd purchased Ditchingham, as a working maltings, in 1965 comprising the first UK built Saladin box plant, dating from the late 1800s. The power to operate the plant came from a waterwheel in the adjacent River Waveney and one of the original box turners is proudly on display at The National Brewery Centre in Burton upon Trent.
The current production facility, consisting of circular vessels, was built to replace the old Saladin maltings in the early 1980’s increasing the annual capacity to around 30,000 tonnes.
However this site has been abandoned since a fire in 1999 and now awaits development into new homes but work seems to have completely stopped.
This site was visited with fellow 28dayer 4lex and another who can't remember their user name! Was a pretty relaxed explore, although this place is certainly becoming a bit of death trap with most of floors rotting and collapsing through each other in numerous places!
