Hi,

I am not after a location.. but I have info on some WW2 Tunnels that exist... Ive found an early video that clearly states and shows people entering the tunnel which was said to house 3000 workers etc during the air-raids... I hear the original entrance point has been blocked up but there is said to be a number of exits etc.. all I will say at this point is it was/is in Southend on Sea and a labrinth of tunnels are said to exist that cross under a certain park..

Does anyone know the place I am on about ? ....

I spoke to some older lads I work with and they spoke separately when questioned with very similar answers ... #EKCO...

Hope someone knows something about this .. ? .....

****Please remove if this question is frowned upon etc.. Many Thanks

There is this report on line - https://www.echo-news.co.uk/news/10579988.second-world-war-tunnels-unearthed-at-southend-primary-school/ and one response -
The tunnel at St Mary’s School was found when the relocatable suppliers began to dig the footings for a temporary building to be located on the west side of the school’s playground. These two new class bases are essential to provide an extra thirty places from September 13 and a further thirty from September 14 as part of the Council’s plans to ensure that there are sufficient reception places for these two years in the central area of the town.
The tunnel seems extends from the school building to underground shelters located beneath or close to the playing field. As little as possible of the area, only that immediately beneath the temporary buildings has had to be filled in to ensure the they have a stable footing. All other parts will remain untouched. There are also two other tunnels on the site, one under the library that was found when it was built, and one in the central area of the playground.
We have tried to get a balance between preserving as much of the tunnels as we can whilst ensuring the much needed extra classroom capacity is safely built.

Do you think they would be accessable before the plans go through ?

We've lifted about 45 to 50% of the lids in that area, most are old sewage small pipe work, we found a big overflow contraption with a kinda round door fitting but just drainage control.. Whilst we've not given up the goal is not as close as we hoped.. Ive over layered maps and tweaked angles to get a better idea...what weve decided so far is the far entrance to the workers shelter had a house built bang on top of it...and we THINK the nearer entrance or exit is somewhere on the grounds of the hospice building...we ve matched a bungalow to an original picture.. to try and locate other possible entrances...but so far no joy ..we did ask the nurses or carers at the Hospice but they were very grumpy moaning about their short breaks and how much of an inconvienence we were... But i defo think those grounds hold some info... another possible thought was the sports ground next to it but as of yet cant find any certified war time pics ..i suspect the middle had an entrance but was covered over years ago.. whilst we cant find an entrace yet.....we figure the tunnels etc must still be there...i doubt the builders that have done the new builds etc would have filled or demolished the tunnels.. so pray one day a way in will present its self

Hi
I worked with a guy who claims he walked about 20m in these tunnels, he said on the white walls it had writing saying something like Seafront 1.5KM and Mayor's Home 1KM and a few others, he said there were a few lights still on in the tunnels. He remembers the entrance being a metal door in a pedestrian underpass by the town centre. I kick myself all the time as I never questioned him further on the exact whereabouts of this door. I do remember him saying hundreds of people walk passed this door every day hence while he didn't hang around there for long.
He said the metal door was covered in old posters.
At the time I had no reason to disbelieve him as he was a descent fella. I've tried finding him numerous times but he seems to have moved away.

Changed mind and deleted post as unhelpful...
Good luck locating either of the 2 escape hatches by the stairs. Will be underneath park somewhere, maybe metal detect for covered over manhole under grass?

Reading the post and replies I'm confused if you're trying to locate the 3,000 shelter or a tunnel network around town.
If the 3,000 capacity shelter, the way the plan half way down the article is marked, is this now or before the building works? It reads like after the building works with 1 end (surface entrance?) now blocked and the other (factory basement?) entrance inaccessible but still there?? Also 2 escape hatches under park by stairs between levels. The scale I'm using is the width of square concrete section at the entrances is 8 foot http://beyondthepoint.co.uk/ekco-factory-and-air-raid-tunnels/ and with a ruler it's 22times that from the edge of a building out to the escape hatched which is about 170 foot ish. If the interest is the shelter, can you get permission to visit Southend library archive? I mean this is local history you wish to study the archive about, maybe a heap of info there.

You can see the two entrances about 20 seconds+ in here
but are you able to identify which park that it?
