The Dyson Rycroft Memorial Hall (1914) was originally the parochial hall of Christ Church in Kensington, Liverpool. It has evidently had other uses over the years including as a stage school, and (apparently) a centre for drug trafficking. The exterior is plain and so is the inside - just a large empty hall with a few nondescript rooms at the back. The local youth have been in and trashed the place, so its pretty grotty. The original plasterwork is mostly intact but starting to disintegrate in places.

This is not a little book of Aristotle - its a worthless tome on midwifery, sometimes called the expurgated 18th century sex manual.

Unexpectedly, there was a considerable amount of literature, ledgers, photographs etc. dating back to 1918 relating to the Boys’ Brigade, specially the 34th Liverpool Company (the Boys’ Brigade still exists and gave rise to Baden Powell's scouts in the early 1900s). This brigade was evidently connected to St Cyprian’s, another church not far away, now converted into lavish student apartments. The stuff was scattered in various locations, including some curled-up photos in the grass outside the building and in a skip round the corner.

I hope that at least some of it is in a safe place now.

The good (early) stuff was sent back to the BB archive in Hemel Hempstead where it belongs. Plaques etc. and more recent literature were left in place.

Hello,I’m a former member of the 43rd Liverpool B.B. company and this church hall was our last headquarters
We held parades, gym and displays here.
If I remember, the front was knocked down when the foyer was rebuilt to encompass toilets, showers etc
It’s sad to see some B.B. memories being lost

Interesting - like most people I had heard of the Boy's Brigade but hadn't realised that it is still going.
Odd that the rear of the building faces the main road - presumably the front (now behind people's gardens) was more accessible in the past.

Hi
The main picture you feature was actually the front of the building.
If I recall,it was demolished along with the foyer to make space for extra toilets, washrooms etc.

As a former BB member, boy and officer (1st Wallasey company), I was very interested indeed to see the reports and photographs relating to the 43rd Liverpool. It did seem to be thriving member of the Liverpool Battalion - I am sure many of the lads have happy memories.
