History

Built in the early 16th century, Elphinstone Tower served as a burial vault for the Murray family, and stands within the extensive Dunmore Estate.

Around 1850, construction of a private chapel beside the tower was completed. St Andrew's Episcopal Church.

The Murray family left Dunmore in 1911. The church was completely demolished in the early 1960s, and a storm around 1968 caused a small section of the tower to collapse.

Report

The ruins of Elphinstone Tower and its remaining burial grounds lie deep within the wilds of the Dunmore Estate.

Inside, the mausoleum has been severely vandalised over the years, leaving it empty and broken. The Murray family coffins have been disinterred and relocated to Blair Atholl. (https://www.buildingsatrisk.org.uk/details/902629)

And the obvious signs of vandalism and desecration adds to an eerie sight.

All in all, Elphinstone Tower is a lovely little explore. Hidden in the woods, it is a peaceful and beautiful setting, with a somewhat sad and nostalgic undertone as you notice the clear signs of disrespect and vandalism.

I like it. There’s a place just like this near me where you can shake hands with a few skeletons if that’s your thing.

Interesting report.
As a dark tourist that really attracts my interest! Mind PM’ing me where?

Certainly no "grave robbing" here. The coffins were disinterred and moved to Blair Atholl in the 90's after the place fell apart and was repeatedly vandalised. Interesting report though.

Thanks for confirming that! The local I was with had been before, and there were empty coffins lay about back then. So we just assumed.
