Report - Ferry house fish farm, Shillingford- September 2020

History:

There isn’t too much to say on this one, the location was a large rambling house that got converted into a fish breeding farm in 1952 and it was refurbished in 2003. It closed up shop in 2018 when both of the owners passed away and has remained in probate all this time. Who knows why it would take this long for the children to fight over who gets what and to be honest there is nothing much left to fight over!

This has been on my list for a rather long time, I should have made a plan and gone a hell of a lot sooner because of course it is now beyond destroyed! I will admit and am not ashamed that I shed a tear or two at this property because of how much I wanted to see it and photograph it, only to walk in and be presented with nearly everything being smashed!

I refused to leave until I got some decent shots, so I spent 3 hours attempting to quietly “put together” a few rooms. After lots of hard work and some injuries I managed to get some pics.! Enjoy :)

Ha ha ha thanks so much! I don’t usually “stage” but it broke my heart and I couldn’t not do it! Ha ha I would do any house that needed it x

I went to this place a month ago, and as much as i agree with you on it being trashed which is obviously very heartbreaking, im not sure how much i agree on the whole rearranging the furniture thing. As explorers, were supposed to leave everything as we find it and just photograph it, whatever state it may be in. Im due to write up my report on this soon, but i feel like theres going to be a big difference in photos now.

Well that’s completely up to you and what you want to do, I don’t usually stage places and I usually take them at face value but I also don’t think that property’s that have been destroyed by teenagers are their authentic versions either. Each to their own. I was upfront and honest about me moving stuff and why I did it

Have to agree with @CandGirl its a grey area & likewise I generally dont move stuff, but from a photographers point of view u only have one chance (usually) to get the shots so want to get the best u can so dont see any harm in a bit of light dusting.

Thank you so much for saying this! This is the only place I have ever done that and I feel like I was doing the place an honour, I don’t think that taking pics of teenagers vandalism is anymore authentic than what I did x
