The name Firth is synonymous with Stainless steel. It is said that the discovery of Stainless was an accident. The company were experimenting with steel and other metals, attempting to improve its strength. After the tests were complete the samples were skipped, and when the next batch were thrown away somebody noticed that one of the samples, the one which was steel mixed with Chrome had not rusted... Stainless, or "bright steel" as it was then known was born.
Turk and I found Firth Vicker's beautiful tiled powerhouse in 2007, but the mill itself was sealed tight. Our return visit got us inside finally, and there was much to see. One gem was the horrific stainless steel fireplace in the board room... I'll leave you to decide what you think of it!
