Firth Vickers 'Staybrite' Works - Sheffield - July 2010

Visited with Host & Kitty.

Big thanks to Kitty for her guided tour of sheffield, to be fair she got a free lunch and a pint out of it, I think we had a good laugh too.

Well, I'll be damned, turns out Sheffield is quite what it's hyped up to be, I would expect to see more as the summer closes. This place was just brilliant, the site itself is huge and the remnants of its heavy industrial past still remain, albeit a little stripped but the smell of metal and oil still lingers quite heavily, particularly in the engine house.

I understand that 'Vickers' as it were, was formed in 1828, in 1868 they became Vickers Sons & Company and changed several different names in the course of time. The site was famous initially for producing casted church bells, later going on to manufacture artillery sets and even armour plating.

We shall begin in the engine house.
