This was a permission visit to Force Crag Mine, a mile or so from the village of Braithwaite. Closing in the 1980's it was open for around 200 years.
As part of my photography courses we're visiting 3 mines in 3 weeks. Thanks to the Ranger; Roy Henderson for his wonderful insight into the past.

Thanks!

They have it secured with padlocks and regularly do maintenance but people break in and smash stuff which is incredibly sad. They've even had a battery powered grinder used to break in. Nothing valuable is there, just premeditated vandalism.

It's quite a big pace, I was surprised.

That’s the worst thing sadly when that happens ruins it for all of us who like exploring them and seing the original stuff what a shame

Cumbria Record Office have plans from several dates (Thelkeld Quarry Museum also holds copies) and in the late 1990's The National Truss commissioned English Heritage to do a full report on the site (114 ring bound pages of pure porn!).
There is also an excellent book on the history of the site:
Tyler, Ian., (1990). Force Crag: The History of a Lakeland Mine. Marton: Red Earth
(if you like mines and mining history of Cumbria then Ian's books are a must)

Numerous plans of the buildings at various dates as well as the details of what remains and this is quite good when viewed with the images of the last processing plant above.
