Permission was granted last Thursday to partly demolish the former Cooperative department store on Spital St and Hythe St. The demolition will see the building gutted whilst retaining the facade, and the construction of yet another car park, in anticipation of any future development.

The building is sealed tighter than a gnat's chaff, and I'm in the process of contacting the council (its owners), seeking permission to visit. It would be after asbestos removal and before the demolition, probably in the New Year. If successful, would anyone be interested in tagging along? It would probably need to be a small group.

How are you doing with this Apollo, had a little snoop yesterday but still drum tight. There was a reasonably recent notice posted about demolition, supposedly started on 19/11/12, and completing on 26/04/13.

No signs of any works though.

That is such a beautiful building. I think its really ignorant when places like this get demolished
Pure economics. Strange thou it sounds it really is cheaper to build new than it is to refurbish the old or convert in many cases, especially when the place has been empty a long time and is an old building like this one.

I won't be the council you'll need to contact, it will be the buildings owners who are:

Homes And Communities Agency
Central Business Exchange 11
406-412 Midsummer Boulevard Central
Milton Keynes
MK9 2EA

(that's their registered address for legal documents)

Their Main HQ offices are based in London and Warrington.

Warrington
Arpley House
110 Birchwood Boulevard
Birchwood
Warrington
WA3 7QH

London
Maple House
149 Tottenham Court Road
London
W1T 7BN

I'd take a punt at contacting the London Office as a starting point. They're the ones who have put in the planning application anyway, so odds are they also own the place.

There are also other offices around the country as well. Office locations | Homes and Communities Agency (HCA)

As they're such a large organisation I think you'll be really lucky, but it does depend who you talk to.

Good luck!

Thanks very much, Maniac. The last planning application lists a Mr Hobbs at the HCA Chatham office, so may contact him first. Thermotec-fire also made a great suggestion of contacting Clearway, the security company.

The HCA is appealing for a variation of the planning permission, meaning the demolished site will be surrounded by hoarding for some time, rather than immediate work on a temporary car park. The demolition itself will still go ahead.

Sorry to bump this thread up with little information, but it turns out HCA grossly underestimated its budget for the demolition, owing to stupendous amounts of asbestos. (Hence, why they're going to bulldoze the store and leave the site vacant for some time, rather than pay more money developing a car park.)
