Forster Green Hospital was built in 1897 by John Forster Green, a wealthy Quaker and tea merchant. He was prompted to build the facility after losing 7 of his children to Tuberculosis. The hospital was used as a TB sanatorium for the first 60 years or so of its life before being used as a mental health hospital. It remained open until 2012 before finally shutting its doors. The hospital has been heavily vandalised and quite largely stripped of hospital equipment (most of which was locked in the basement and completely inaccessible). However, it still made for an interesting visit and although utterly pitch black inside, the architecture and style of the wards took you back many years. A recommended visit for anyone passing through Belfast. The abandoned city mortuary also remains on the same site as the hospital, allowing for two visits in one sitting.
