I moved down to London before getting a chance to have a second look into this, but it's got quite an interesting background. The old building was unused for about a decade, until a guy decided he'd like to make it into a cinema. He was a real sci-fi buff, and spent about a year getting everything sorted. Eventually planning fell through and he ran out of cash. Enter the Galaxy chain of cinemas - they took the opportunity to take over and finish it off.

Personally, I never saw anything there. It was a bit of a dive, and tended not to have any real decent movies going. I always wondered how it stayed afloat - the only time I saw queues was when the first Twilight movie came out and a whole stream of girls were outside waiting.

It shut down over a year ago, boarded up, and a notice went up saying it was "closed for emergency repairs". According to the local rag, the building's roof was really bad, and water kept coming through. The money coming in wasn't enough to keep things afloat and repair the roof, so eventually they just shut the place down. I had a quick reccy at the time, but it was boarded up solid on the front (right on the main road) and the back was bolted up tight too. It slipped from my mind.

A short while ago I heard a news story that made me laugh. Police were called to the premises after a local reported odd goings on, and they suspected a break-in. They bust down the door and took a look around, only to find something quite unexpected on the top floor. Turns out that, in order to recoup their losses, some of the staff had set up a giant weed factory inside the closed building. From what I hear, a few people got busted over it.

Here's a Google Maps view of the cinema. It's still boarded up at the front according to a few friends that live in the area.

If you're a Notts / Derby local, it might be worth checking out! :)

Its still "boarded up", but seems to have a door that is used by seemingly random people every 5 minutes, so not sure what is going on in there now.

Interesting. I know there's a flat above the shop to the right of the cinema, so maybe that's where people are going? I think the very left-hand door on the cinema goes to the back area round the shops to the left, too.

There's not much inside. The roof over the old stage was never replaced after the fire, so has been open to the elements since.

The screens are cheaply made shoeboxes, in a modern, garishly coloured, Odeon style (in fact the lettering over the ticket counter appear to be actual Odeon letters that they've reclaimed). There's some features of the old cinema remaining upstairs, but a lot of what survived the fire then got ripped out when a beetle infestation was discovered.
