I do not know much more than that this was "Gefechtsstand der 4.Flotille Warnemünde", ie, the protected command center for East German Navy's fourth flotilla. The relatively large bunker now lies in the middle of a nature reserve, so it was woodpeckers we photographed, when the Rangers asked what we were doing in the wood...
:
Volksmarine, (People's Navy) was East Germany's navy and part of the Volksarmee. Volksmarine was formed in November 1961, and was dissolved along with the rest of East Germany's Military October 2, 1990 in connection with the reunification of Germany.
Volksmarine was included as part of the Unified Baltic Fleet, together with the Polish Navy, and under the leadership of the Soviet "Red Star Order's Baltic Fleet" The main task was that in the event of war, to conquer the Danish belts in order to gain access to the North Sea. Volksmarine included frigates, corvettes, landing ships and minesweepers, but no submarines.
Volksmarine had bases in Peenemunde, Rostock and Stralsund. (Stralsund was Swedish 1648-1815. But Sweden apparently got tired of being a great power, and Sweden have since then been at peace with the rest of Europe
