The Glenfield Tunnel is one of the world’s first steam railway tunnels and is just over one mile long. It was designed by the famous railway engineer George Stephenson and built between 1829–32 under the supervision of his son Robert.

Whilst in the local vicinity, we decided to drop by and check on the Glenfield Tunnel. When we approached the metal doors at the beginning of the tunnel, I spotted a big padlock on the door which didn't fill us with hope. I happened to lean against the door while shining my torch through the holes and lo and behold they swung right open! Unfortunately as we reached the end of the tunnel, PigDog's torch decided to die, luckily we had spares!

Visited with PigDog and explorer Dog Binky, I present to you The Glenfield Tunnel

These were the grilles that were placed on top of the ventilation shafts preventing people from falling in

Looking up yet another one of the many ventilation shafts, We could actually hear the traffic rushing by and members of the public talking

Reaching the end of the tunnel, We are met with the bricked up portal with metal rungs leading the way to a heavy cast iron cover, Where this is located above ground seems to be a mystery. If anyone does know, please feel free to get in touch!
