Further adventures in Shuddersfield... This was the second visit of a day of birthday explores, and the first actual success, having failed (again) to get into somewhere a little more impressive further down the road, getting soaked (again) in the process. Before parting company, @Mr Beady helpfully suggested this mill nearby would be worth a try, leaving me and @Sheard to investigate. Entry required a fair amount of acrobatics and contortionism, and the ground floor and basement levels were sealed, but otherwise this was a nice location with a few bits and pieces left.

L’history

This is the second of two mills that were once connected by an enclosed bridge. Mill one is currently being renovated; Globe one will include a doctor’s surgery, retail units, an artisan hall, cafe and office space. This building, Globe two is set to include a nursery, offices and gallery space.

Established in 1887 as worsted-spinning mill by Globe Worsted Company, a newly formed combination of local manufacturers. The site, divided by a public road, was developed in stages. The first mill, detached boiler house, chimney and offices were built between road and canal In 1887-8, possibly to designs by Thomas Varley of Slaithwaite, with the second mill or warehouse built on other half of plot in 1889. Main mill is fireproof, of five storeys and thirty-three bays, and has central engine house and rope race. Sheds were added to the mill, one at least used for combing. The 1889 mill/warehouse, of five storeys with a basement and of fifteen bays, is of fireproof construction and had a small engine originally. It was connected to main mill from beginning by an overhead walkway.’

nice. Not bad here is it. Had a nosey in myself a couple of months back when i was passing.

Yes, was really good one to have in reserve when our other plans failed. Spend our time in there too as it was a pain in the arse getting in, so noticed some bits and pieces that I would have probs missed with my usual run about technique!
