Not the site we set out to do today, but the Haddon tunnel was a better substitute. 1058 yards long, it was built in 1862 so the Duke of Rutland (obviously a rich bloke) wouldn’t have to see a train line run along his estate near Haddon Hall. It closed in 1968, and is in reasonable condition, aside from the flooding. The large break in the middle and 3 airshafts make this an interesting site. There are currently plans to reopen the tunnel as a footpath, which is likely to involve some costly repairs.
The site has already been visited by others already this summer, but we wanted to catch it before any development work takes place. Our visit has been following a vast amount of rain in the last week, followed by a big freeze. Explore with King Mongoose.
