Hantergantick Quarry, St.Breward, Cornwall. Jan 2011

First up, a big thanks to Dangerous Dave for spotting this place on Google, and suggesting we check it out whilst wondering around a nice sunny Cornwall.
This is another new site from the South West, (3 in as many weeks now, with several more to follow!)
From the outside this place didn’t look too special, a bog standard steel clad industrial unit, which wouldn’t look out of place with a Tesco or B & Q sign on the side, (hence no externals!), but once we poked around a bit, we managed to find a few nice bits.

The history of the site is extremely vague and sketchy, but from the little bit I can establish, mining started on the site in 1918, and closed in 1997. The quality of the Granite that was mined there was of an extremely tough and durable quality, and can be seen in both Milton Keynes, and the piers of London bridge.
The parent company who were operating the quarry, were subject to 2 prosecutions, one following the death of 2 workers on the site, and also again after a serious case of contamination on the land surrounding the site, which has been classified as a site of special scientific interest. (SSSI)
It is generally thought that these two cases brought an end to the activities on the site.
Unfortunately, the two large cranes on site, which can be seen on the Google earth images have long gone, a few pics of what is left:
