Visited with Oyster and Cyberchi one sunny day in September, my first Lunatic Asylum I've visited and spent a good few hours exploring and chatting! We saw two other explorers in a distant block but they couldn't see us as we were in a building seeing them from the window across the field.
Plenty of buildings to visit but bringing a torchlight is a good idea as most of the buildings are quiet dark on the ground floor. Also wear some decent footwear as some floors in some buildings are quiet fragile! Most of the buildings are sadly trashed and have seen signs of scrap metal thieves.
A brief history to bring context to the explore and pictures :
Harperbury hospital was located on an old Royal Flying Corp aerodrome from WW1. After the war, the site was selected for a mental hospital and in 1928 the first building was built on the site.
In the height of its use, it held 1,587 patients in the mid 1960s and overcrowding became a problem. By 2001, only 200 patients remain and it is now classified as closed. A small section of the hospital is still active today.
