Hartford Mill - Oldham - August 2010

Visited with Host

This was a last minute explore, the main mill floors don't offer too much unfortunately, empty, all windows broken, fire damage. The engine house in this place however is absolutely fantastic.

It is difficult to describe, as although the main building is somewhat disappointing, the engine room is something else. It is absolutely huge, I stood in awe for a while as this once hub of power and industry now lies dormant in its own swill of oil, wood and pigeons.

Looking at past report, Host advised me that pikey's have been in and taken the handlebars off the stairs that run at the rear of the mill, this made for (me) a very hairy / scary ascent.

I also lost my floor virginity today, as in the fact that I actually went through the floor, only a 5ft drop mind but never the less it woke me up.

History is basic, Built 1907, closed 1992 with last occupier being primarily mail order company 'Littlewoods', Built by Architect FW Dixon, it housed 120'000 spindles and is grade II listed.
