This is my report of the Hartwood Asylum, located near Shotts, North Lanarkshire.
I went along with 3 others hoping to avoid the security guards, which we did.
This 19th century psychiatric hospital was shut down in 1998. Like many other Victorian institutions in the area such as Gartloch Hospital, Stonyetts, Lennox Castle and Kirklands, the inception of the Community Care Act 1990 gave rise to a more community-based focus for long-term mental health care, and the consequent closure of long-term psychiatric hospitals.
The twin clock towers of the main building look amazing.
On the day only 2 of our group managed to get into the building, probably due to the evil fence completely surrounding the property, so any interior shots taken were by someone not me. We did have a nice creepy moment, when we think a farmer rounded one of the buildings holding a rifle in the crook of his arm, on further discussions we think he was just looking for rabbits. But enough of my ramblings lets get on with the photos!
