History:

The centre was opened in July 1977 and replaced swimming baths which had been located on Station Road.

A submission to the planning committee states: “The existing leisure centre building has reached the end of its economic life and a new leisure centre is in the process of being constructed in Argents Mead to open in April 2016.

“When the current leisure centre is no longer in operation it is proposed to be demolished it in anticipation of the redevelopment of the site, which has yet to be formally established through the planning process.

“The method of demolition of the building would be by workforce and mechanical means and all demolition materials removed from site.

The explore:

No dogs, no seca, dead easy. Totally black inside, an eerie site to behold when into the main swimming pool. I visited a few times and got better photos are more was demolished and so more light entered the building. Extremely hard to get good photos with my little camera with no natural light and was heading into shutter times of over 30 seconds!

Great photos.

I'm not sure if it is just me, but I always find it quite sad seeing places like this in ruin knowing how much it probably meant and contributed to the community.

Good job for recording it!
