HMP Holloway was the largest women’s only prison in Europe until its closure in 2016. Rebuilt between 1971 to 1985, the prison's design was intended to produce an atmosphere more like a hospital than a prison. This design was recognised as a failure in the 1980s as its lack of traditional wings or landings, and a maze of corridors, means warders had difficulty monitoring inmates.

The history of Holloway dates back to 1852 when the original prison opened as a mixed-sex establishment, but due to the increasing demand for space for female prisoners, it became female-only in 1903. Inmates of the original prison included Oscar Wilde, and more recently Moors murderess Myra Hindley from 1966.

Holding female adults and young offenders either sentenced by the courts or being held on remand, the prison consisted mostly of single cells, but there was also various dormitory accommodation. In January 2016 an inquest into the death of Sarah Reed, a paranoid schizophrenic being held on remand, identified failings in the care system. The prison was closed in July 2016, with plans for it to be sold for housing.

Time to start the unofficial tour....

Seeing a drunker than usual @Monkey hanging off the girders above the swimming pool was one of the scariest things I'd ever seen. Then I had to go home and watch eurovision. Nice report.

I like what you have shown, amazing that they just drop the place and move on.
The best thing is you could walk out of the place free.:-)

Nice 'Report Op'

It's so strange looking at places as if everyone just walked out.

28dayslater film was thought provoking, personally I think 80% of people are Robots and not very nice but a world alone would be ace for a good mooch for a month or two.

I can't do what you guys do in reality due to health stuff but yer thanks it's more than interesting.

Thanks for sharing your mooching.

Hi I really only mooch and lurk on here as not been anywhere good enough to report yet and working hours and kids don't allow me to be as adventurous as i used to be in my younger days, but did try this last night. (Rare evening to myself) On mine and my friends approach to the main entrance it seems there is security in place as we saw two guys in the gatehouse. There is also new Harris fencing on the side road and 2 diggers on the grass out the front. Looks like something maybe happening to it very soon. If any one can shed some light on how they got in please can they message me(may have a rare night on my own coming up again soon :thumb). We walked around and around for about an 1hr but all looked inaccessible. Thanks Roundy.
