My first post in some time! It's been a very slow year this year, slower than other years for sure. I did this one back in the summer with some friends and haven't really had the time to get them uploaded, so here we are! The explore was fun, but not very prison like for the most part; which is no surprise given that it hadn't been used as a prison since 1992; though it was quite interesting seeing quite an eclectic mix of old prison and training facility!

The place looked well in the afternoon sun, but an incredibly smelly surprise awaited us in the old canteen; where a drum of all the old food from the last day of use in 2010 was festering in the middle and being continually re-hydrated via a leaky roof! Not Nice!

Originally, in 1940, this site was used by The RAF during the Second World War as a Mobile Radio Unit. in 1958, it became known as "The RAF Wartling Domestic Site" which consisted of hutted accommodation and a Married Quarters estate. By 1964, the RAF Wartling radar station closed; with site then reopening in the January of 1969 as a prison.

HMP Northeye as it was known as; was a Category C Prison and used many of the original RAF buildings remaining as its prison buildings, with more being added in the 1970's. On the April 1986, the inmates had an altercation with the Prison Guards, approximately 60 out of the 450 inmates set fire to the buildings. By October 1992; the prison closed its doors for good and the UAE (United Arab Emirates) refurbished the site; using it for a technical training project. This project was aimed to prepare a new generation of UAE nationals who were at UK colleges looking for a technical future in the UAE Armed Forces.

This ended in 2010; leaving the prison disused ever since. It was announced in 2023 that the site would be used again as a holding centre for 1,200 English Channel Migrants; but this has yet to come to fruition.
