This school was visited at the very end of a very long day of exploring in Gary, Indiana. By the time we got there it was perhaps late afternoon and somehow the group we were in had swelled from five of us to ten! I never really like exploring in big groups like that but in a place like Gary which can be seriously dangerous if you're not careful it was actually quite comforting.
There isn't a great deal of history I can find online about this school, but it closed in 2006 and somehow managed to fly somewhat under the radar as far as explorers - as well as most of the lowlifes - in Gary went. Architecturally it wasn't pretty, having been built in the mid-20th Century but it was absolutely rammed full of stuff - and not just fully furnished classrooms, the gymnasium and auditorium were both filled with things from at least two other long derelict schools in the area that must have been placed into storage there. I'm not sure whether the school is still standing or not, Gary's Public Schools Service recently put 33 abandoned schools in Gary up for sale and this one wasn't on it.
I wish I'd taken more photos in here but I was absolutely knackered and still suffering jetlag having flown into Chicago and the very next day heading off into Gary, so my mind wasn't really in it!
Emerson is a now infamous school in Gary, as the body of a murdered young woman was found dumped in there a short time before my trip here.
