ICI Imagedata, Brantham, Essex - July 2019

I had been planning on doing this one for a few weeks. It's about 2 hours from me around the M25; Mookster and I visited last weekend. It's just my sort of thing really; it's quite stripped and smashed up, but its got some amazing decay inside and out; just the kind of industrial decay I always crave, nice and quiet here and a decent undisturbed morning.

I didn't realise that this site was actually related to one I had done years ago; Wardle Storeys; which I believe is now completely demolished. ICI operated their Imagedata site here until a buyout in 2010. The site produced plastic products such as the clear plastic coatings on ID Cards; some really nasty chemical processes happened here I would think! Thankfully it was well ventilated!

This area was once a joint venture between British Xylonite {BX } and Ilford, [as in cameras and photographic films] running under the name Bexford producing thermal films often using Methyleme Chloride. It was taken over by ICI at some point in the 1960s. There were once 3 film making machines here. It remained operational as ICI Imagedata before being taken over by ITW Imagedata in 2010, who, I believe, still operate out of part of the site. There's more on some of the chemistry once used at this site at https://www.idtechex.com/en/timeline/ici-imagedata/c44085
Imagedata is now part of ITW Security Division who are part of ITW Speciality Films. The ITW Security Division was formed in 2012 by consolidating the management teams, technologies and resources of ITW’s well-established security laminate and personalisation businesses. Sorry if I've bored you.

There were actually four film making machines, one of which has been completely ripped out.

It’s 3 hours from me, I’m debating Whether it’s worth it or not..?

It's two and a half+ hours from me and I enjoyed the place so much I went twice, it just depends what gets your juices flowing. If it's bashed around oldschool industry it's definitely worth it.

I used to work here when I was 18 for 2 years on shifts running the photographic paper machines for jessops and Kodak. I was in B block! I'm only over the river so will pop here today
