From the second I saw a picture of this building I wanted to go. It shouts at the top of it's voice everything I love about architecture of that time... this place was the future. ICI had money, and reflected that with their buildings.
What you have to bear in mind is that this huge building was only the battery for what must have been one mother of a chemical plant. Sadly today all this is gone, and for years the powerhouse stood alone. I really thought it was long gone, but on the off chance we went for a looksee...
Access was childsplay. Once inside we ran up to the top floor to get in the epic glass "control room" at the very very top of the building. We speculated what it was going to be on the way up, only to find it was a bloody lift motor room! If I was the powerhouse master, I would have insisted on my office in that room. One thing is for sure, the Evan's lift man had a very nice working environment!
Things like this are not going to turn up again, I urge you to go and see it while you can...
