1. The History
Independenta Sibiu is a company manufacturing machinery for metallurgy in Romania . It was founded in 1875 by the foreman, Andreas Rieger, who turned his house into a workshop in 1868. It was nationalized in 1948, the name of the company being changed to "Independenta Plants", merged with other enterprises, including the former "Virola" plant, founded in 1855 by Friedrich Fabritius), and new sections were built. During the communist era, it was one of the largest car manufacturing companies in Romania.

In the glory years, Independenta was the largest enterprise of Sibiu, with between 8,000-10,000 workers. After the Revolution of 1989, the Independenta Company followed a well-known path in Romania: privatization and division. In 2008, the company split into SC. Independenta SA, SC. Virola-Independenţa SA and SC Casa Albă-Independenţa.

2. The Explore
Having not done a big industrial site in Romania, this massive factory bang in the middle of Sibiu looked a prime candidate. Google.com showed me the best way to get in so early one morning I set off to the site. Unfortunately, they had a very effective security presence. See in the pictures below. Having failed via the main entrance I walked the very extensive perimeter of the factory to no avail. Hence just externals of this massive former industrial heavyweight.

3. The Pictures
The factory dominates this part of the delightful medieval city of Sibiu:

No one in the reception office:

But sadly this fella and his mates stood in the way:
