Located just off covert lane coming away from Scraptoft on the outskirts of Leicester, is the Ingarsby Tunnel (also known as the Thurnby Tunnel). This was on the Great Northern Line. It is filled in at the North entrance and the south entrance has a 4-5mm sheet of metal, but someone has cut a hole in one corner with, looking at the cutting area, was a welder. There is an air shaft half way along.
Just 200 yards from the south portal is an Aquaduct that was built to divert a stream going through the planned route of the line when constructed
My friend "The Wombat" is sat on the top of the portal
Tacky graffiti, ruining the tunnel for everyone else
Alcove for rail workers to get out of the way of passing trains
Air Shaft
Into the Abyss
Looking back at the entrance from 3/4 in
The filled in north portal
Another alcove, there's about 12 along the tunnel
The walls are seeping water, looks like for years judging from the rust
on our way back out, I took this shot just before the air shaft
Nearly out the tunnel
The holes are for bats to get in
On our way to a footpath we found this aquaduct
I'm a third across the bridge, didn't dare go further
