This was a very unexpected explore on my way home from Glasgow I decided to pop in. I have passed this site hundreds of times and always wanted to do a decent snoop around so today was that day. I was only equipped with my mobile but it isn't too bad quality wise, I will return with my Canon and do a full site report. Anyway here is some information on the history of the site and how it came to be.

Killearn Hospital was one of five commissioned in 1938 in preparation for the war. Building started in 1939 and was complete in 1941 in time for the air raids on Clydebank and other Clydeside towns, which could be seen and heard in Killearn.

Local people had been asked to assist in getting the hospital ready to meet the emergency. As well as air raid casualties it was used for treatment of sick and wounded servicemen, injured seamen from convoys arriving in the Clyde, essential war workers, pensioners and Prisoners-of-War. It played an important part in the Clyde Valley Scheme for urgent treatment and care of war workers and was also used for emergency cases from the surrounding population.

The hospital had close links with Glasgow Western Infirmary but had several special units of its own. The orthopaedic and neurosurgical units were famous throughout Scotland, the latter being transferred to the Southern General Hospital.

The hospital was designed to provide 640 emergency beds, but after the War its total bed complement was 404.

The distance from Glasgow caused problems with the transportation of emergency cases and of visitors and nursing staff.

The hospital was eventually abandoned in the early 1970’s.

Access to the site is very easy, I managed to drive right in and park up in the centre of the site. ( 56.033937, -4.391579 )

The first two photos are courtesy of Stirling Council the rest were my efforts this afternoon.

This was a nice explore although there are areas at risk of asbestos plenty of signs telling you this, I did have a mask and did not disturb anything. The area is really massive and a proper explore would require a good few hours to capture the full beauty of the place.

I’ve heard awful stories about a very angry man (potentially with a gun!) who confronts people who go in here. Sounds as if you were lucky and didn’t meet him when you were there. I popped in today and managed to creep around without being spotted but I’m planning to go back with my mask next weekend and have a better look (and try to avoid the guy!)

Yes we got in there. There were guys actually demolishing it around us but we managed to avoid them and even found the operating theatre! It was well worth another try. Loved it.

How far into demolition are they? Been on the cards for ages but nothing ever seemed to happen.

I’m not sure. It looked like at least a few of the huts were completely gone judging from the gaps. They were starting at the back of the site. We only managed to get into 3 of them. Some have no fronts left at all. I hadn’t been before so don’t know how many there used to be but we couldn’t get near the ones at the back in case we were seen. Nor the few right beside the house beside either for the same reason.

At least you found the op theatre, it’s the best bit! I know it’s a total shit hole but I’ve enjoyed many a wander around there over the years. Never once bumped into the angry dude. Some of the buildings are used for storage by the neighbours and have been photographed and posted on Facebook so it’s no wonder they don’t like unwanted visitors!

Yeah I wouldn’t much like that either. Poor souls.

And not to mention that most of these groups probably enter the site in a very loud and unsubtle way so it’s no wonder the reaction they get!
I only ever go with one person and we creep around as quietly as we can and try to avoid obvious ways in. Lots of my friends keep asking to come along too but it just gets more tricky the more people there are. Glad you e never come across that guy tho!
