Kitley Caves ...

Also know as Shelter cave was discovered in the eighteenth century after quarrying for green marble in the area ... Opened to the public in the 70s as a show cave it closed to the public in 2000..

Remains from the Stone Age have been discovered here including Human , hyena ,hippo and cave bear and also Bronze Age artefacts ...

The Explore...

I visited this place in the late 80s when it was opened too the public..

We decided too stop off here as we were in the area

The entrance too the caves is hidden in the undergrowth behind the old admissions shed ,the entrance was once grilled ,probably when the caves were closed too the public, but now the grill lays rusting on the floor by the entrance.

It’s fairly much a walk in,gravelled paths and roped areas still in place ,the grilled bridges over the flooded areas creaking and wobbling as you pass over them, the coloured lights that used too light up the rock formations still there ,some hanging by their wires.

This is a nice little easy Explore if you need a quick fix and need too feed your urge to be underground.

Excellent work Steve! I checked this out a couple of years back but it was sealed, good to see the inside after all these years.
