This tunnel was dug from the compound of the prison to the bottom of the cliffs to enable convicts to be moved to the site of work on the eastern arm. They were to be used in making the large blocks which were used as foundations to the breakwater, in the harbour of refuge scheme of 1883. This scheme (for whatever reason, it is not known) was not adopted and the convicts were used in sewing mailbage for the Post Office. The tunnel was used in WW2 as a means of access for the Coast Defence Artillerymen in the Battery on the end of the Eastern Arm to the Infirmary at the top of the cliffs.
