Hello all so this is my first post on the forum so pleaSe be nice :) I recently went to Golkicker after seeing it on another explore I was on close to this. This was probably my 6/7th explore to date and was the first time I’d taken a proper camera along too.
Gilkicker didn’t disappoint! Although a fair bit was sealed off I still had a quality explore took about 500 photos. The main sealed bits were the parts they seem to be slowly developing. Didn’t fancy the tower as it was capes in anti vandal paint and was extremely windy. Once your in you can really be seen the the top outer perimeter is very exposed. Have attached some photos for all too see. As said I haven’t been exploring or taking photos very long so be gentle and just wanted to say hello to everyone. What a wicked thing to be a part of!! I’ll do a quick intro my names Chalkie and I’m from Southampton. Have been exploring for less than a few months but am getting well into it with about 7 explores under my belt. The scenes, the feelings, the atmospheres, the history and the stories I just can’t get enough of it!! Once again good to meet you all!!

Good place for your first report. And nothing wrong with those pics. Good work.
Thanks HughieD not my first explore but definitely my first which I felt good enough to post. First time I took a proper camera Aswell, which I’m now regretting :-(

Nice mooch, what was it when it was in use?
Was there poo in the closet?
Luckily no poo in the poo closet half a smashed toilet I think from what I can remember... it was a fort originally two 6 inch and 2 9 inch gun placements on the top. The big building with the chimneys was the living quarters for officers and other ranks plus the servants

I was wondering why the chimneys were so high, do you think they had another floor at some point?

I don’t think so from what I saw there and from the historical photos I’ve seen. Maybe just the thing at the time. Also thought maybe to get them higher then the outer perimeter as you wouldn’t want a fort full of smoke and soot. Not entirely sure though think it’s more likely the design for the period

I wondered if it was for the smoke situation.
Could well be.... Have done a bit of research and can’t seem to see anything which specifically says why. Seems to make sense tho. Also I can imagine you wouldn’t want a thick plume of smoke blocking your sight whilst your firing.

I've just had a thought, i wonder if it was to lessen the chance of a cinder coming down still hot enough to ignite. I fancy doing a bit of research now lol.

Hmmmm that’s also another viable point. After all there is loads of underground storage where they did keep ammunition. I fancy finding out the real reason myself now.
