In the early 80s I was shown round a large tunnel under the city centre in Liverpool, I was told that it was used in the WW2 when the gold was moved from London and distributed in the banks in Liverpool. The tunnel was big enough for a bus and had a full size train track in it, it led from the river Mersey and under the city with branches leading off it to the individual banks. I was shown the tunnel via the now gone supermarket Kwik Save branch on Hanover st. Has anyone heard of this.?...

Hi PAULCON :)

You may get a touch more reception off people if you whack a little intro about yourself into the new members intro section first, what your into exploration wise etc...

Without that, it's like shoulder barging someone's front door in and asking where the local shop is. A little knock on the door first will be much appreciated.

What your after sounds very interesting! I'd love to give an answer, but I've no idea about them.

He's posted a lead/rumour, he isn't asking for locations or access details so an intro isn't needed really

There was a tunnel (train) that went from the Docks to Edge Hill, not sure if this is the one. I was for train passengers coming off the big ships. Not sure when it closed.

Isn't there a tunnel in use, Liverpool Central via James Street to Birkenhead ?
Running along Church, Lord and James Street

I don't know where that supermarket was located
My map is from 1890, nothing to be seen in Hanover Street.
Maybe take the train and have a look.

The bank of England was on the junction of Hanover st and Seel st up until about the 1870s, and I think that's where the quick saves was, about here somewhere..?? Dunno..

Further to my earlier thread, I remember the building that Kwik save was in , was at least 5 floors high, with the Kwik save on the ground floor all above floors were not in use. The tunnel itself had electrics in it , and plenty of lights. Looking at Google earth I don't recognise the building currently on the site. I can't believe the tunnel was filled in , it was really big, long and wide.

Can you wack a link on from Google Earth, being a lot older than most of you, I remember Liverpool in the 70's so may shed some light on what the building was.
