This was the second of our two visits of the day. The whole site is closed but we only had enough time for the boarding house and the nursery garden. We got into one room of the store house but the rest of the building is water-tight.
Lonsdale House was a boarding house for the boys dormitory at Rutland County College after the college was extended in the mid-80’s. Before this it was use as an educational building with student quarters on the top floor. In September 2012 the college was re-located to nearby barnsdale, on the site of the closed Barnsdale Hall Care Home. I’m struggling to find an exact date to when Lonsdale closed but most reports are saying 2011. Unfortunately the building suffered 2 arson attacks in April and June 2012. Latest reports point to a supermarket chain buying the site and applying for planning permission for a medium sized store.
There’s still quite a lot of stuff about the building and in good condition. The building however is fucked, the roof could do with retiling and as a result there’s massive amounts of damp. There are parts of the flooring that are missing due to rot and fire. The basement is also 2 inches deep in water.
All in all, a good explore. Explored with the Wombat.
