Not been hitting the sites recently so have been keen to do some sort of report. This place was very relaxed and involved looking around in the undergrowth for traces of the former lead mine in the beautiful surroundings of Lathkill Dale. There’s a bit of history here.

Mandale Mine, Over Haddon near Bakewell, is located in Lathkill Dale. It was primarily worked for lead, initially by the London Lead Company’s Lathkill Mine which was then later taken over by the Lathkill Dale Mining Company. Mining had been carried out for many centuries prior to that and may have begun as early as the Late Bronze Age. Mining at Mandale Rake, in the eastern part of the Dale was first documented in the 13th century. Apparently the workings here were cursed by water problems. The excavation of the Mandale Sough was begun in 1798 to try and solve the drainage issues. In 1839 steam engine was erected along with a waterwheel to drain the mine. This soon became inadequate for the task and a steam Cornish pumping engine was erected in 1847. Mandale mine closed in 1851 leaving traces of the Cornish Engine House, a Sough Tail and also an Aqueduct, Leat and Waterwheel pumping system. Lathkill Mine closed prior to that in 1842. Here remains James Bateman’s House, mine agent between 1836 and 1842. Several buildings were constructed close by including an ore dressing coe, a smithy and a workshop and, to the west, a powder house. Under the house is a shaft. Bateman’s site used to house an unusual water turbine pumping engine to pump the mine.

Here's the pictures.

Many years ago I was a frequent visitor to Mandale mine it is a very interesting place. It is noteworthy as being one of the oldest lead mines in the peak. The gate is not locked as such all you need is a large adjustable spanner to unfasten the locking nut.If you do venture inside be carefull as there are several unstable areas with Deads supported by now rotting wood and also a hole that appeared near to the entrance incline. It was the first lead mine that I entered when I became interested in such things back in the late 1980s.

Interesting. I'm not into urbex but have been here, seen some of this, which is why I joined, might find some stuff out to my advantage. I never run out of places to visit!

Me and some mates were in here in February, when the accessible part of the sough by the path was chest deep. We got into the main part of the mine, beyond the grille, using the 'derbyshire key' and had a nice couple of hours, going through the main sough tunnel until it was chin deep and we thought it probably time to get out before we drowned. The higher level section had some dodgy deads, IIRC. I'm commenting today because I've just seen a post on the UK Caving Forum that the DCA, which officially 'controls' access, is going to put a different kind of lock on it which will require a code. That would be a shame, in my opinion - apparently it hasn't happened yet, so fingers crossed...
