I know it’s been on a couple of times recently since first infiltrated but as a local wanted to do my own take on it. I used to work in the rival Kingsway and the competition was fierce between the two clubs in the days where they were the only main venues that you could get a drink at past 11 o’clock
Originally built in 1871 on the promenade the first purpose was as a Victorian baths with separate areas for males and females as well as first and second class baths. The baths I believe were filled by the high tides hence known as saltwater baths. The baths existed for many years before finally closing in 1978 and the building was split into 3 parts, a fitness centre(still open), a bar and the bit I explored was turned into a nightclub which had many names some more successful than others. Manhattans and Palm court(probably most widely known as), Colosseum, Club 2000 and finally Havana if I remember correctly. It has been closed since 2006 due to changing demands away from large capacity clubs to smaller bars and has suffered a lot of water damage with pigeons residing in the roof. As it’s grade II listed it will cost a lot to put right but due to its prominent position it has a good chance of being save and repurposed.
