Travelling by train is great for finding new sites, just past the old BBC sports ground I spied this old disused factory works.
So without further ado, I got my backside into gear early one Saturday morning and hightailed it down there.
History;
Manuplastics was originally founded in 1933 as Prestware Ltd.
In 1958 Prestware purchased a number of small plastic injection and moulding companies and amalgamated and consolidated them at the Southdown Works at Raynes Park.
The company name was changed to Manuplastics Ltd in 1965 and this name still remains to this day, recently they moved to a new purpose built premises in nearby Wimbledon.
The claim to fame of Manuplastics is that they developed and produced the 'one at a time' mechanical dispensers known as Sweetex.
The new owners of the site, Access Self Storage, had planned to build a 24-hour self-storage unit and offices.
The aluminium ribbed cladding, royal blue panels and bold branding of the planned six-storey development has been labelled an “eyesore†by furious residents.
So the battle lines have been drawn and this 0.55 hectare site of prime real estate lies vacant.
The relocation means they took most of the machinery with them.
